About Us

The Victoria Foundation is a community foundation and a registered charity accredited by Imagine Canada. By connecting visionary donors with causes that truly matter, we’re able to invest in people, projects and non-profit organizations that make our communities stronger – now and for the long-term. We’ve been doing so since 1936.

Who we are and what we do

Operated under the distinguished patronage of Her Honour, The Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Victoria Foundation is a registered Canadian charity* and the second oldest of Canada’s 191 community foundations. We manage charitable gifts from donors whose generosity allows us to create permanent, income-earning funds, which are distributed in the areas the donors wish to support.

In doing so, the Victoria Foundation helps charitable organizations succeed in building community resources in Victoria – and increasingly, throughout British Columbia and Canada. A gift to the Victoria Foundation makes a difference to the communities we serve now and in perpetuity.

Areas of priority

What inspires us, year after year, is the opportunity to make a difference in virtually every aspect of community life. We focus our granting around five key areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact:

  • Arts, Culture and Heritage
  • Community Services
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Health and Recreation

Advantages to the Community

Our perspective

The Victoria Foundation has a bird’s eye view of the challenges facing our community. Because we work closely with both donor and non-profit organizations – and because we conduct the annual Victoria’s Vital Signs® community report – we’re in a unique position of knowledge regarding the most pressing concerns and needs around us. This expertise is invaluable in helping donors plan their gifts for the greatest and most lasting impact.

Our endowment

Since our start in 1936, the value of the Victoria Foundation’s total assets under management has increased to more than $183 million. Our growth has enabled us to support and develop innovative programs to help keep Victoria well. Through our knowledge of the non-profit sector, we provide information to donors and manage their financial gifts to ensure their philanthropic wishes are met.

Our grants

The Victoria Foundation has a long and esteemed history of helping, supporting and investing in our region. With our close connections to the non-profit sector, we provide insightful, effective grant distributions to improve the quality of life in our community.

Grants are distributed to registered charities via donor-directed funds, bequests, and through the Vital Victoria discretionary fund.

The foundation also manages funds that support scholarships – including those created by individual donors and those distributed on behalf of the B.C. government through the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society.

Our work with donors

We make it easy for our donors to support causes that are important to them. There are many ways to give, such as establishing a fund in your area of interest, or giving where the need is greatest through federally-registered charities.

Prudent financial management of endowed assets achieves maximum returns and assures sound financial management practices so donors' legacies are respected in perpetuity.

In addition, our foundation manages endowment (permanent) funds on behalf of numerous registered charities and several provincial programs (Youth Education Assistance Fund, the Lex Reynolds Adoption and Permanency Fund and the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Action Fund)
