22 Post-Secondary Students Receive Premier’s Scholarships For Study Abroad

Vancouver Island University student Angeline de Bruyns, a recipient of a One World international scholarship, speaks at the launch of the International Education Stragegy during which an additional $2 million was announced for the international scholarship program.Victoria, B.C., June 5, 2012 – Premier’s scholarships valued at $6,000 to $10,000 for study abroad have been awarded to 22 B.C. students, the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society announced today.

A total of $148,000 was awarded to the B.C. public post-secondary students. This year’s recipients will go to a variety of countries to study topics such as anthropology, human kinetics, fine arts and international relations (see list of recipients).

Premier’s scholarships are funded from the returns on a $13 million endowment fund established by the Province of B.C. for international education. They are part of the One World international scholarship program managed by the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society. The Minister of Advanced Education, Naomi Yamamoto announced an additional $2 million for the program May 28.

“Everyone benefits from the perspectives and connections gained by B.C. students studying in other countries,” said Yamamoto. “Our International Education Strategy will ensure more students have the opportunity to study abroad.”

Hugh Gordon, chair of the Irving K. Barber B. C. Scholarship Society welcomed the new funding – noting that this year marked a record number of applications and scholarships granted in the Premier’s Scholarship program.

“There’s a growing recognition of the value of the international exchange of knowledge and culture,” said Gordon. “These experiences are invaluable in a world where success depends on international partnerships and an understanding of global markets and issues.”

The Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society has awarded just over $1.1 million in international scholarships since 2008, when the program began. Premier’s Scholarships are adjudicated and awarded all at once each year while One World scholarships of $1,000 to $3,500 are awarded throughout the year following adjudication by the individual post-secondary institutions.
