Carried out in six area high schools, YiP aims to benefit local charities and help students gain hands-on experience in philanthropy and community development. By examining the students' own values, setting goals and conducting research (much of it driven by the Foundation’s annual Vital Signs® report) about local charitable organizations, each school’s Youth Advisory Committee decides how to allocate grants. Students also conduct interviews and often do site visits before presenting written recommendations to the Foundation’s board for approval.
The hard work of the students over the past school year will culminated on May 26th at an official wrap-up celebration at the Parliament Building Rotunda. YiP students, teacher advisors, Foundation Board members and staff were on hand to congratulate this year’s 14 grant recipient organizations and present them with a slate of grants totalling $15,000.
"Youth in Philanthropy is an in-school extra curricular program that engages young people in community development," says Sandra Richardson, Victoria Foundation CEO. "We think it is a wonderful way to empower youth, while helping them to develop critical thinking and leadership skills, tapping into their energy, insight and skills."
