The Youth in Philanthropy - Students Who Care initiative provides students with a hands on experience in the realm of philanthropy and community development. Participants are encouraged to question their values and learn skills to become more active community members as they develop into adults.

History
Formally launched in three schools in November 2003, the program has grown to include six area high schools:
The reach of this program extends across three school districts and four provincial electoral ridings.
Grantmaking Component
The annual program begins when each school establishes a Youth Advisory Committee (YAC). The Victoria Foundation allocates each of these committees $2,500 to distribute to federally registered charities of their choice, within the County of Victoria. Students discuss areas of interest and determine their committees’ goals.
Using Victoria’s Vital Signs as a tool, the students learn about critical issues that exist in their community; how to build on existing strengths and how to address current challenges. Students then research potential charities, conducting interviews and on-site visits. Each committee member provides input and the group as a whole decides how to allocate the grant making funds. The written recommendations are then presented to the Victoria Foundation Board of Directors for final approval.
Endowment Fund Component
Each YAC also contributes to their grantmaking activities by establishing a permanent endowment fund at the Victoria Foundation. Each year thereafter, the Foundation provides a grant of $500 to each school to build on the existing endowment for future granting.
Summary
Participation in the Youth in Philanthropy - Students Who Care program is a valuable and unique opportunity. Students gain skills that last a lifetime and stand them in good stead for future academic and professional endeavours. These youth witness first-hand the tangible difference they make in the community around them, as well as gain insight into the world and work of local charitable organizations. Through developing and nurturing philanthropic ideologies, it is the hope of the Victoria Foundation that participants will be inspired to practice philanthropy and support the community throughout their lives.
